Classical Indian Motifs: Floor Art Edition

Updated: Jun 14

A motif is a recurring narrative element with symbolic significance. And symbolism is a universal human process. Symbols are cultural assets of a society. In fact, culture itself is a symbol.

If you notice carefully, the entire edifice of Indic civilisation is built upon motifs and complex symbolic structures. Through symbols, ideas and meanings are represented, and there is both concealment and revelation.

Symbols from classical India have facilitated communication by giving a common reference point for a variety of original disparate ideas.

In this series, we look at the Rangoli as a store house of symbolic motifs and the starting point to understand India's perception of floor design, reverence for the cosmic forces and philosophy of life itself!
