Feast your eyes on a remarkable bronze from 8th century Kashmir

Ancient Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, was located at the site of what is now called Pandrenthan (literally, "the ancient capital") and is a suburb of the modern city of Srinagar, a short distance away. Presently a military cantonment, Pandrenthan is rich in ancient ruins.

This exquisite sculpture from the 8th century is believed to have been found either in Srinagar or Devsar, near Kulgam, Anantnag district, and is an important site often mentioned in the historical chronicles of Kashmir.

The bronze is remarkable for its richness of detail and exquisite finish. Both the stem and the central flower of the lotus are smoothly modeled, endowing the swelling forms with life.
